Chaplin's masterpiece City Lights: the world's first ballet adaptation
The New National Theatre, Tokyo presents the world premiere of a ballet based on City Lights, the comedy film directed, written, produced by and starring Charles Chaplin, who created numerous masterpieces in the early days of cinema and is known as the "King of Comedy." Depicting laughter, sorrow and unconditional love, the work remains one of Chaplin's most beloved films, and British choreographer Alastair Marriott now brings it to the stage as a ballet. Although City Lights was a silent film released in 1931, it featured an original score with music and sound effects only, the first that Chaplin composed himself. For this production, that music has been newly arranged for orchestra by Timothy Brock. Look forward to seeing how Marriott, who revised the choreography for Miyako Yoshida's production of Giselle for the National Ballet of Japan, together with award-winning designers Dick Bird and Ellen Ruge, portrays this timeless romantic comedy as a ballet.
